Oliver Cromwell – Why did you refuse the Crown?

Oliver CromwellI refused the Crown mainly because I felt that I was not worthy of it.
But there were other reasons…

I was a humble servant of God and an ordinary man. I believe in democracy and I didn’t fight the tyranny of Monarch Rule to become the potential tyrant myself.

My followers and soldiers all stood as one for the Rule of Parliament and against the absolute rule of King. Simple men would not understand the perceivable hypocrisy of such an action myself.

Strange as it may sound nowadays, I also do believe England should have a King, or Queen. My argument is one of Power Sharing.

So, although I was offered the Crown on more than one occasion, I could not find it within myself , nor were the conditions right for me to become King.
